eHive Product Updates

We’re continually making changes to the eHive platform to make it better for you to use. Over the past few months we’ve updated the text associated with the rights status of your objects to make it clearer to understand and more in line with best practice globally.

We have added the ability to search for the date a record was created when using the Advanced Search option.

Finally if you’re on a Silver plan or above, you’ll have access to analytics on your account. We’ve made some changes behind the scenes to keep it in line with changes Google is making to its Analytics tools. It all looks the same to you but now seamlessly combines the data from older data and new into one set of information for you.

Over the past few months we have introduced a number of changes to the system. There are now public and private search facets for Cultural Permissions, Collection Strengths, Country and Region.

We have simplified the data structure behind the scenes to speed up the view and save process, and you can now change your Catalogue Type as you work on an object.

We have updated the public searching on collections (eHive accounts) to exclude those with no contact information and we have made some changes to the technology which serves your images to the internet.

Finally we have updated Help content on eHive fields to give more detail and better examples.

View of the outside of the Glasgow Women's Library. It presents as regal, old, sandstone building.

Glasgow Women’s Library is the only Accredited Museum in the UK dedicated to women’s lives, histories and achievements, with a lending library, archive collections and innovative programmes of public events & learning opportunities.

Our collection of museum artefacts champions, celebrates and teaches us about how women have shaped lives locally, nationally and internationally. The objects, all donated, chart women’s historical and contemporary achievements and contributions, contextualising the connections across the many spheres that women inhabit within the ‘personal’ and the ‘political.’ The collections include Suffragette memorabilia, radical feminist campaigning materials, girls’ annuals, recipe books, knitting patterns, badges and protest banners, contemporary artworks, rare books, LGBTQ+ t-shirts and the National Museum of Roller Derby!

eHive adds Cultural Permissions

We have introduced the ability to assign cultural permissions levels to objects in your collection. Cultural permissions allow you to provide further knowledge about an object to inform users of your collections about any cultural significances they may have. It’s a great way to provide appropriate care and protection for taonga you are caring for, as well as a tool to avoid inappropriate use of traditional knowledge.

You can find out more about how to work with cultural permissions for your collections through our new help article

The facilities options on your public profile page allow you to record and display them to the public. We have extended the list of options available to you including options for educational programs, EV charging, free Wi-Fi and more.

We renamed ‘Copyright’ to ‘Rights’ and added the option to assign ‘No Rights Reserved’ to an object. This makes it a Creative Commons CC0 licensed object and available to be shared freely.

eHive ID log in option soon to be retired

Email sign in screen

In 2019 we introduced the option to log into eHive using an email address and password. Almost all eHive users now use this method, so we’ll be retiring the old ‘eHive ID login’ option on the log in page in October. If you’re still using an eHive ID, not an email address, to log in at present then you’ll see a warning when you log in, along with options for switching to log in with an email address from now on. You’ll need to switch to the email-based login as soon as you can.

First World War Marquetry Box

About this object

Marquetry box made by a German POW at Kinlochleven prisoner camp during the First World War and presented to Janet Weir Adamson (later Stewart) who worked at the camp for the war effort. Janet died in 1928, but her family kept the box as a treasured family heirloom.

The camp was operational from 1916-1919. Also known as Loch Eilde Camp, it was part of the British prisoner of war camp network and operated as a satellite to Stobs Camp in the Borders. The camp hosted mostly German prisoners of war with also some British conscientious objectors. The camp was cleared after the end of the First World War. However, almost the entire plan form of the camp remains visible.

Testimonials

New England Regional Art Museum

I’ve worked with the Team at eHive to deliver three online collection projects – across archives, library and art museum collections, both in New Zealand and Australia. The technical support is exemplary and the eHive Team have offered guidance and advice that makes solving any problems easy and maximising project potential possible. I’ve used eHive as both a host website for online collections, and for a fully integrated museum website search experience that has helped diversify our audiences and allow people to respond to collections in a tangible way.

Tanya Robinson - New Zealand & Australia

Mataura Museum

Thanks to eHive we are now a museum without walls. After putting our collection online, web visitors exceed physical visitors by a factor of ten, all without having to set up and maintain our own website. This wider reach has brought a raft of new connections to our small community museum.

David Luoni - New Zealand

Tweed Regional Museum

eHive has allowed the Tweed Regional Museum to easily publish our collection online, making it more accessible than ever before, revolutionising how we work and how far our collection can go. The back end of the system is incredibly easy to use, making it simple for staff with non technical backgrounds to publish the collection online. The team at Vernon have an excellent customer service ethos and help is never far away. We can’t recommend eHive to other small or medium museums enough.

Erika Taylor - Australia

Ashley Parker

Personally I consider eHive to be an absolute triumph. It is easy to use, logical, comprehensive, economic, safe (as in backed up), it has an open data/migration path to get data out and the support is superb. I will absolutely encourage other institutions I come across to change over to it. I did a pretty thorough analysis of the competition out there before selecting eHive and it seemed the best approach of all the choices.

Ashley Parker - Australia
